CITY OF NAGA, Bicol Region – Residents staying on an 11-hectare agricultural land at Cararayan village this city resisted the attempt by a demolition group to tear down their houses despite the lack of demolition order.
The pending demolition is the 18th attempt by the landowner to clean up the area of settlers and marginal farmers.
The 11-hectare land owned by Wilzon Luz, a businessman, is rumored to be a dummy of the late DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo.
Robredo had served as Mayor of Naga for 18 years, and during his dispensation, his critics had cast suspicion on him for alleged amassing real estate properties registered under a string of dummies.
The Cararayan property commands several hundred million pesos at current real estate value owing to its proximity to Naga’s central business district and commercial, and high-end residential areas.
The demolition team, including policemen arrived 8:00 in the morning, their big number giving a message to residents that they are there to destroy houses
About 100 city policemen, SWAT troops, backed up by a fire truck tried to disperse the ranks of residents and farmer members.  .
Latest update said a standoff occurred between the demolition group and residents.
Helping the affected residents are members of Cararayan Farmers Association who made good their defense that forced the 150 demolition team to back out temporarily.
During the standoff, Naga police had blocked tricycles going to Cararayan by ordering drivers to stop at Barangay Balatas, about 3 kilometers distant.
